Fiona Apple came on the scene looking like the epitome of heroine chic. Oozing with teenage sexuality, Fiona dropped her debut album Tidal in 1996, earning her a Grammy in 1998 at 19 years old. Her video for Criminal directed by Mark Romanek became somewhat controversial…I say it was pretty chic, especially for a time when Calvin Klein models were MAJOR.

Crazy Cat Art x Louis Wain

Cat artist extraordinaire Louis Wain (1860- 1939) seemingly mapped his journey into schizophrenic psychosis through his extensive output of  humorous & sometimes suspicious looking cat drawings. A prolific artist, his work appeared in newspapers, magazines, comic strips and over 100 children’s books. He often drew cats in scenes parodying human behavior & fashion fads of the time. We love that he was once President of England’s National Cat Club, and a devoted cat activist.  His life story is super fascinating, read more at Wikipedia: Louis Wain… and he shares my same birthday, how random is that! Meow.

Teen Angels is a rad little magazine that’s been around since 1979 featuring photos of families, cholas, cholos, “dedications”, PEN-pal letters, Lowriders, tattoos and art work submitted by readers. I found all of the below listed on eBay in good condition…Can’t say I’m not tempted to place a bid or two.

London Love: Lazy Oaf

UK label Lazy Oaf has been churning out the fun goods with a sense of humor since owner/designer Gemma Shiel founded the brand with her hand-silkscreened tees in 2001. Illustration based & graphic heavy, the colorful prints make us giggle with delight. The ss/12 look book is a near perfect pop-fashion specimen for what it’s worth. Can’t wait to see what the kids have cookin’ for f/w 12. Gotta check out the Lazy Oaf Blog & the relaunch of their Minnie Mouse inspired Lazy Oaf x Underground (Japan) creeper collaboration! Being lazy never looked so good.

The Decades of Miss Universe

Before Toddlers & Tiaras, the world had Miss Universe. These pageant queens give girls of the world something to aspire to: the unattainable illusion of perfection & global validation. The international Miss Universe pageant was started by a California clothing company & was first held in Long Beach, CA in 1952. Now owned by Mr. Donald Trump, the pageant was first televised in 1955. Since 2009, the Miss Universe crown is set with 1,371 gemstones, weighing 416 karats, & includes 544 grams of both 14k and 18k white gold + platinum. Now that’s officially out of control. We’ll take 2 please.
